Water Quality & Ecosystem Health

Kylia Delta, Ukraine

The aquatic habitats of Kylia Delta are closely linked to the water quality of the Danube River. While periodic assessments have shown good water quality, monitoring has been suspended in recent years, making it difficult to evaluate the impacts of war and climate change on the area’s ecosystems. The delta’s shallow ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to rising water temperatures, reduced precipitation, and lower discharges, which could threaten migratory fish habitats.

SWIM will carry out regular water-quality and ecological assessments along the Kylia arm and the Black Sea outflow to pinpoint pollution sources and develop nature-based habitat restoration measures, helping to restore migratory fish populations.
