Habitat Restoration
Thaya River Basin
Fish migration in the Czech Republic is being disrupted by rising water temperatures, which affect key biological processes such as reproduction and feeding, ultimately impacting the entire food chain.
As part of the SWIM project, hydrological models will be developed to predict water availability in the short and long term, incorporating climate change projections and physical parameters such as water temperature, determining water quality. In addition, Czech authorities have created a nature reserve along the Morava and Dyje (Thaya) rivers, aimed at restoring the floodplain forest's ecological functions.
A key focus is the resilience of river habitat ensuring successful reintroduction of the Sterlet sturgeon (Acipenser ruthenus), a migratory fish species from the Danube, which has been ongoing since 2014. Repeated efforts to reintroduce the species have failed, being water temperature suspected as one of the main factors preventing it.
