Habitat Restoration
Starača and Tišina Swamps, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnian Posavina, a less developed region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is home to important wetlands like Starača and Tišina swamps, which serve as key habitats for migratory fish. These wetlands are threatened by human activities, including agriculture, water drainage, and climate extremes.
SWIM’s planned activities include restoring water connectivity to Starača to prevent water loss and ensure cological sustainability, as well as supportive stocking of migratory fish to strengthen wild populations. This effort will help establish a protected area along a 6 km riverbed, contributing to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s integration into the Natura 2000 network and supporting nature protection across Europe.
