Fish Breeding & Conservation

Caraorman, Romania

Sturgeons, one of the most endangered fish species, face threats such as habitat loss and illegal fishing. With wild populations declining, their survival relies on artificial breeding and supportive stocking programs, regulated by CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) for effective conservation.

SWIM’s proposed ex-situ conservation facility and fish enclosure will use innovative aquaculture techniques. To ensure long-term sustainability and offset high costs, a commercial aquaculture facility will also be established, supplying the local market and reducing pressure on wild stocks. The Caraorman Sturgeon Complex will produce native fingerlings for stocking, sturgeon products for local restaurants, and foster community support for conservation efforts, while creating jobs and promoting sustainable fish farming.
