Fish Migration & River Continuity
Ostrovul Mare Islet, Romania
The Iron Gates II hydropower dam affects the river’s longitudinal connectivity, disrupting fish migration and requiring the creation of a fish passage. Located in a hilly area with terrace-like banks, the dam lies between the Danube's two arms near Ostrovul Mare island. Preliminary monitoring has identified sturgeons in the area, but further research is needed to properly locate the fish entrance and ensure an effective use of the passage.
SWIM project will monitor and track migratory fish movements and habitat usage, providing crucial data to design an effective fish passage. This effort supports the restoration of river connectivity and access to upstream habitats for migratory species.
